This comparison gets framed as a contest, which is the wrong way to look at it. Excel, Power BI, Tableau and Looker Studio are not four answers to one question. They are four tools that happen to overlap.

Excel is not a legacy tool. With Power Query and Power Pivot it is genuinely capable, and no BI tool matches it for free-form analysis.
Excel is the right choice when: the analysis is one-off; you need cell-level flexibility; you are building a financial model with scenarios; the audience is one or two people; or the data comfortably fits.
Files above 50 MB. Opening takes minutes. Multiple people need it simultaneously. Filenames contain final and v3. The same manual refresh happens every month. Any two of those and you are past the point where Excel alone is costing you more than a BI tool would.
For most Indian SMBs, Power BI is the sensible default — not because it is the best at everything, but because the ratio of capability to cost is unmatched.
Power BI is the right choice when: data comes from ERP, Tally or SQL; you need real modelling across many tables; you are already on Microsoft 365; you need row-level security; or you need scheduled refresh with proper governance.

Tableau is the strongest tool here for visual analysis. Its interface for exploring data visually is still the benchmark, and for analysts who spend their day interrogating data it is a genuinely better experience.
Tableau is the right choice when: exploratory analysis is the core job; you have analysts who will use the depth; visual sophistication is a business requirement; and the budget genuinely supports it.
The honest caveat for Indian SMBs: the licence cost is hard to justify against Power BI unless that exploratory capability is actually being used. Buying Tableau to build fixed monthly dashboards is paying for a capability you will not touch.
Looker Studio is the right choice when: budget is a real constraint; many people need to view; you share externally with clients or vendors; your data is in Google services; or you want a working dashboard this week.

After five years of building these systems, the setup that works for the majority of Indian SMBs is not one tool:

We have seen expensive Tableau deployments produce worse decisions than a free Looker Studio dashboard, purely because the underlying data was never cleaned. The reverse — good data, modest tool — almost always works.
For recurring reports built from multiple sources and shared with a team, Power BI is better: it handles far larger data, refreshes automatically and keeps one version in circulation. Excel remains better for ad-hoc analysis, financial modelling and any task needing cell-level flexibility. Most businesses use both, with Excel for exploration and Power BI for distribution.
Tableau is worth it if exploratory visual analysis is genuinely central to your work and you have analysts who will use that capability daily. For standard operational and management reporting, Power BI delivers comparable business value at a substantially lower licence cost, which is why it is the more common choice among Indian SMBs.
A worksheet is limited to 1,048,576 rows, and performance degrades well before that. However, Excel's Power Pivot data model can handle many millions of rows because it stores data in a compressed in-memory engine rather than on the grid. If you are hitting the row limit regularly, that is the clearest signal it is time to move to Power BI.
Looker Studio, by a clear margin — it is browser-based, has few concepts to learn and a person comfortable with spreadsheets can build a usable report in an afternoon. Excel is familiar but its advanced features such as Power Query and DAX are not. Power BI is a moderate step up, and Tableau demands the most investment to use well.
No, and most businesses should not. A common and effective setup is Excel for ad-hoc analysis and modelling, Power BI or Looker Studio for shared dashboards, and automated email for daily distribution. The tools solve different problems and using each where it is strongest costs less than forcing everything through one.
